Yemen Today

Yemen is currently in one of the worst humanitarian crises known in history. There has been an ongoing civil war occurring in Yemen ever since 2014 between the government and the Houthis.

Who are the Houthis?

The Houthis are Shia (A sect in Islam) Islamist politicians and military organizations. Who are against their current government culture and rebel for a change? The Houthis are funded by Iran and are pro-Palestine believers. Overall, even though both the Houthis and the Yemeni government are in conflict, they are still in support of Palestine mutually.

United States Responds to Yemen and the Israel-Hamas War

According to Al Jazeera, “Yemeni Houthis will not stop Red Sea attacks until Israel ends Gaza war,” Many Americans are infuriated by this information. They say that what the Yemenis are doing is nonsense and they should not get involved in regard to the carpet bombings and tens of thousands of innocent lives being taken in Gaza. “Even if America succeeds in mobilizing the entire world, our military operations will not stop … no matter the sacrifices it costs us,” -Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a senior Houthi official, said in a post on X.

The Yemenis understand what Palestinians are going through currently since they are familiar with the same horrific things they experience on a day-to-day basis. The Houthis show true solidarity and respect towards the Palestinians and are determined to do whatever it takes in order to not be silenced. Millions of malnourished children and a deprived economy have completely corrupted both the government and the lack of aid Yemen gets from the world.

The US cuts off aid for Yemen through the United Nations

In response to Yemen's stance on the Israel-Hamas War, the World Food Program “ceased humanitarian aid designated for the Yemeni people in areas governed by Sanaa,” Sanaa is the capital and largest city of Yemen, home to historic sites and monuments. The UN has been providing aid for the people in Yemen for countless years. The amount of aid that has been given to Yemen every year is $1.16 billion dollars, however, the US has cut this off for it to be perceived as a punishment that they are active supporters of Palestine and are not afraid of showing it.

America is the reason why Yemen is starving, yet they choose to bluntly show their ignorance by letting millions of people die. The blood of these poor civilians is indeed in the hands of the United States. Our government cut off aid for this third-world country just because they do not share the same values as our government does. This truly shows how we live in a society where having personal opinions is completely forbidden. How we are simply programmed to think of issues merely from one perspective, and one perspective only. Our country certainly preaches “Justice and freedom for all” as said in our Pledge of Allegiance, however, does this come into effect when millions of children’s blood is on our hands? How are we told that we are people of “freedom” when we are not entitled to our own opinions?

US and UK conducted multiple airstrikes on Yemen

According to CNN, The US and UK militaries launched air strikes against the Houthis in “Houthi-controlled areas” in Yemen on January 11, 2024. Why is such a thriving and wealthy country constantly hurting an already soon-to-be failing, third-world country? Well, President Joe Biden justifies his actions by saying it was, “in direct response to unprecedented Houthi attacks against international maritime vessels in the Red Sea.” The United States and the United Kingdom both feel offended at the fact that Yemen is creating problems with the areas of and near the Red Sea. This is mainly because Yemen is doing this as a way of protesting and showing solidarity towards the people suffering in Palestine currently.

Six different Yemeni cities have been viciously attacked in the middle of the night. American and British bombs are falling on civilian areas instead of their targeted people, the Houthis. Over 17 million people in Yemen are experiencing food insecurity and are malnourished. Along with cutting their aid to the United Nations that they deeply depended on, on a daily basis the US and UK are making matters worse and bombing innocent civilians already struggling to survive.

President Joe Biden also adds in his statement that he will, “not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce as necessary.” In this quote, he is directly simply saying how he will continue to cause havoc amongst the innocent civilians living in Yemen, with no sense of kindness or empathy for them. All that he seems to care about is his economic growth for his country rather than the world's humanitarian needs. This deeply shows how much of a greedy and selfish world we now live in, how much people value money, their own economic growth, and well-being rather than at least showing a bit of empathy and care for the ones suffering in silence.

Our society has become corrupt and people no longer care for others. Humanity and our understanding of others have completely been forgotten in the efforts and dreams of achieving success, with money made from greed. How long will the rest of the world be silently suffering while we are happily thriving solely because of their hardships and struggles?
