Bodegas are the heart of New York, and the two delis by 1619 Boston Road feed our students day and night. BHSEC students have a lot to say about it. For example, Kayden Martinez (10th grader) observes how “the deli by the scaffolding is always filled with people in the morning,” and Jeriel Gonzalez (10th grader) adds his own formula for a great bodega: “The dirtier the deli the better the food…Oh! Oh! And the cat is the manager.”
We know a lot of students deeply care about these delis. In my own opinion, if I was able to eat food from the deli all day, I probably would. We know that the students care about these delis…but what do the deli store owners think of us? In other words, what do they think about the kids coming in? I went to my local bodega, “Deli Grocery,” and asked the owner Fernando how he felt about us. His response was classic: “You know, I have never seen so many kids eat the same thing every day!” “The main 3 things that are gone or we have to restock are Takis, Arizona (mainly the mango flavor), and a bunch of gum!” “But overall, It makes my day to see kids come every day.”
The next deli owner I spoke to was “A G R DELI GROCERY CORP,” known to students as the “Arab deli.” The deli owner was very hard to get a hold of, but the small convo I had yielded the following observations: “These kids come in every day on high energy asking for the same things and not paying attention to when I call them...you kids aren't that bad.”
Some people might go to the deli for the morning pick-me-up, or just for a sandwich or a little snack. We should really take care of our delis and really appreciate the people working for them; without delis, New York wouldn’t be what it is today. Thank you to all the deli workers who feed the Bronx day and night!
