“All praises be to Allah in every situation” were the last words of Imam Khalifa Williams, also known as Marcellus Williams, who was wrongfully executed by the state of Missouri.
In 2001, Marcellus Williams was sentenced to the death penalty for the murder of Felicia Gayle even though DNA results suggested that he did not commit the crime. It was not until 2016 that the Missouri Supreme Court assigned a judge to oversee a new DNA test on the weapon used to murder Felicia Gayle. This test showed zero DNA connection of the weapon to Marcellus, instead, it showed that the DNA of someone else had been connected to the weapon. However, the judge never called for a new hearing. Marcellus waited in prison for years, until recently when the latest and current governor decided to set him a new execution day.

Marcellus Williams's execution was scheduled for September 24, 2024. The prosecutor's office that had first convicted him did attempt to set him free, but the Missouri Attorney General opposed their motion–without good reason; the Missouri attorney general stated that whether Marcellus committed the crime or not, it was just too late! Disgusting.

Marcellus Williams was wrongfully executed, no, he was murdered on September 24, 2024.
His case is a stark reminder of how flawed the justice system can be and how it can fail innocent people. Despite the evidence showing his innocence, the system didn’t work in his favor. Willaims’s case is a prime example of why it is so important to keep our justice system in check and to ensure that no more tragedies like this one reoccur.
